Baby Carter

Carter was baby #3 for the Phillips family.  He came exactly on his due date and was delivered by the doctor I most loved at the HealthPartners Clinic, Joan Krieder.  When Carter presented himself during delivery, his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and Dr. Krieder skillfully and calmly took immediate action.  I think she cut the cord on the wrong side of the clamp (while it was around his neck and he was still not fully outside of my body) because she said something like, "Shoot" as blood squirted everywhere.  After Carter was fully delivered and cleaned up, she came and sat on my side of the bed and said, "That was really scary," and gave me a hug.

This is what I wrote in my journal shortly a few weeks after his birth:

I have not written for awhile. The last couple months of this pregnancy were very difficult. My carpal tunnel syndrome was probably the worst of it all. It made everything very difficult. I am very grateful that it has gotten much better since Carter was born. I am very grateful for my health and that Carter is healthy. I think since the last couple months of pregnancy were so difficult, it has made actually having three kids seem easy in comparison. Devon's mom came up to help the day Carter was born. She was able to stay almost two weeks. She just left on Saturday night. And, we have survived having three kids for three days. (With help, of course.) Meals have been brought in by some of my friends in Relief Society and my friend Leigh Eagar took Faye while Edmund was at Joy School today which meant I was able to take a nap. (Carter seems to have his days and nights mixed up. I remember the same was true with Faye.)

Welcome home, baby Carter!
